Au Pair Requirements and Qualifications

Becoming an au pair in the United States can be more than just a dream. Are you ready for this amazing opportunity? In addition to loving children and cultural exchange, you need to meet basic requirements from the U.S. Department of State to qualify for the au pair program. If you meet these qualifications, you're likely eligible to begin your year as an au pair! What are you waiting for?

  • Previous childcare experience
  • Be available for a 12 month position
  • A graduate of secondary school (high school) or equivalent
  • Be between the ages of 18 and 26 when your program starts
  • Be in good health and have no criminal record
  • Have a driver’s license
  • Meet U.S. entry requirements

Hello New York City! AuPairCare presents AuPairCare Connect, a New York welcome and adventure for overseas arriving au pairs. Host families and au pairs asked for a new in-person opportunity, and we are ready to hit the town! Let’s have some fun and make some lasting friendships in NYC before beginning an amazing program year!

New AuPairCare au pairs arriving from overseas will receive a warm welcome to the United States. Au pairs will fly from their home country to the NYC area and attend a 2-day welcome event that includes making new friends, cultural immersion to the United States, a fun all-day tour of New York City, and group activities setting them up for success in their program year.

This unique experience will help au pairs connect with each other, with AuPairCare, and with the United States, setting up a terrific start to their program year with their host families, with au pairs feeling confident, connected, and supported.

Benefits of Being an Au Pair in America

Becoming an au pair in America is unlike any other experience you’ll have. It combines your love for kids with cultural exchange, travel, learning and friendship. As an AuPairCare au pair, you'll earn a weekly stipend with room and board provided, and you'll have the opportunity to travel across the United States and make new friends from around the globe.

One of the most major au pair benefits is what you learn on program will help further your career by improving your English skills and spending time studying at an American University or College.

With AuPairCare, you’ll enjoy many au pair benefits during your time on program:

  • Flight to and from the United States
  • J-1 Visa Sponsorship
  • Travel and accident insurance package for 12 months
  • Au Pair Academy childcare training and introduction to America
  • Attend AuPairCare Connect: Experience New York City and create friendships before meeting your host family
  • A private bedroom in your family's home
  • Earn a weekly stipend of $215 minimum*
  • 1 1/2 free days per week, plus 10 days of paid vacation during your program year
  • Up to $500 USD in education money to attend college classes (you must complete 6 credits or equivalent)
  • 24 hour emergency line and continuous support from your local AuPairCare Area Director
  • Monthly cultural events with other au pairs in your area organized by AuPairCare
  • Opportunity to extend your program for another 6, 9 or 12 months
  • 30 days to travel the country at the end of your program

    *AuPairCare minimum weekly stipend is $215 per week which is higher than the U.S. Department of State minimum. Host families and au pairs are free to agree to a weekly stipend even higher than the $215 per week minimum.

Ready for Adventure in
The United States

Your American experience starts with your online Academy training, where you will learn about life in the United States, and online events where you’ll meet other au pairs. Start your U.S. journey in New York City with an amazing experience at AuPairCare Connect, where you'll make new friends, experience the sights, and start your program year confident, connected, and supported before meeting your new Host Family. Once your program begins, you'll spend your free time exploring your new surroundings with new friends! AuPairCare hosts monthly events online and in-person to help you meet new friends and experience each other's culture.

Many au pairs also go on vacations with their host families and friends throughout the year. Once your program is completed, you'll have the opportunity to travel in the U.S. for up to 30 days!
