Every year, on the second Sunday of June, many people and communities in the United States come together to celebrate International Children’s Day, a time to commemorate childhood, and the importance of caring for children. It’s a moment to reflect on how to create a better, more loving world for children everywhere.
At AuPairCare, we believe in making a difference not only in our host families’ homes but also in the local community. Every month, our more than 100 AuPairCare Area Directors host Cultural Connection Events across the U.S. These events bring au pairs together to experience American culture, meet new people, and give back through meaningful service activities.
Timed around International Children’s Day, many of our Area Directors organized events focused on helping children in need. These moments of kindness highlight the value of community, compassion, and cultural exchange.
Let’s take a look at how AuPairCare au pairs celebrated!
In New York State, au pairs and host families gathered for a community breakfast and collected donations of diapers and gently used clothing for The Sharing Shelf. This organization supports low-income children and teens by providing them with appropriate, high-quality clothing for school and daily life.
Area Directors Renate , Denise , and Suzana collaborated on this event to show support for those facing financial hardship. Everyone who participated left with a sense of purpose, knowing they had helped children feel safe, warm, and supported.
In Pennsylvania, Area Director Lauren and her au pair group hosted a lemonade stand. The event raised funds for Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, a nonprofit that funds research to find cures for pediatric cancer.
The foundation was inspired by a young girl named Alex Scott, who bravely began her own lemonade stand to help other children battling cancer. Her legacy now lives on through events like these, where communities unite to bring hope and healing.
Au pairs had fun preparing and running the stand while learning about how one simple idea can grow into a powerful movement. It was also a wonderful way to meet community members and engage with a great cause.
In Ohio, au pairs joined Area Director Monika to create handmade blankets for children in the foster care system. Many of these children move homes without any personal belongings, and receiving a warm, handmade blanket can bring a feeling of comfort and security.
For many au pairs, it was their first time making blankets by hand. Despite being unfamiliar with the process, they embraced it with care and enthusiasm. As they tied each knot and chose each color, they felt deeply connected to the cause and took pride in knowing their efforts would bring comfort to a child in need. The experience was not only meaningful but also joyful, as the group bonded while working together for a good purpose.
At AuPairCare, Cultural Connection Events are more than just fun activities; they are a key part of the au pair program, fostering understanding, friendship, and empathy. A heartfelt thank you to all our Area Directors, host families, and au pairs who make these events so special and meaningful.
Happy International Children’s Day from all of us at AuPairCare!
