Dahiana is the ultimate au pair for many reasons. She fits in so seamlessly with our family. She has truly become part of our family. She is so incredible with our children. Our children have formed an amazing bond with her. She is such a sweet, loving and caring person. She can also be firm when she needs to be which is so important when raising children. She has shared so much about her culture with our family and it has been such a wonderful learning experience for all of us. I honestly don't know what we would have done without her this past year.
Dahiana has been the most amazing addition to our family this past year. Before Dahiana arrived, the children's grandmother had been helping us with our childcare. Their grandmother has had some health problems recently and we realized that we needed to find alternate childcare. Dahiana could not have come at a better time. This past year has been full of so many uncertainties and difficulties with the pandemic. We were very nervous about changing our childcare and were not sure what we were going to do. We had never even heard of what an "au pair" was before we started looking for alternate childcare plans. So we did some research and discovered this sounded like an amazing opportunity for our family to learn about another culture and language while also helping us with the kids.
Dahiana came from a small town in Colombia and she had never been outside of her country before. This is her first time in the United States and it has been such an amazing experience for our family to share so many firsts with her. She has worked so hard to get to where she is today and is such a deserving person. She has been such a blessing to our family.
Once we met Dahiana we knew right away she was going to fit in well with our family. She is incredibly kind, caring, and thoughtful. We could not have asked for a more perfect fit for our family. She is so great with our three young children, 6, 5 and our youngest is 3. We have learned so much from each other. She has taught us about her country and her culture. We have also taught her about our traditions and customs. It has been the most amazing learning experience for all of us. Dahiana had never been outside of her county, Colombia, before coming to the United States. It has been such a wonderful experience being able to show her our family's traditions and culture. Dahiana has shared many special Colombian traditions with our family. She taught us about Dia de las Velitas (Day of the Little Candles) on December 7th which represents the immaculate conception of the Virgin Mary. She made beautiful paper lanterns and we set them up together in our front yard. This was a time to reflect on the meaning of Christmas and to give thanks for all that we have. The kids really enjoyed this tradition and the lanterns were so beautiful. She has taught us how to make delicious Colombian cuisines. We have made empanadas together, a wonderful Colombian Christmas custard called natilla, Colombian style rice, bunuelos, and other amazing Colombian dishes.
Dahiana is very artistic. She helped us decorate for our eldest son's 6th birthday the month after she arrived. She helped us make balloon bouquets, beautiful decorations, the ninja turtle birthday cake, and crafts for the party. She helps the kids to make cards and crafts often which they always enjoy doing. We also got to pray with her and her family in Colombia as they celebrated the 9 days leading up to Christmas. We learned about putting lentils in our pockets and around the house as a tradition for prosperity in the New Year. We have been able to show her many of our traditions as well. She got to dye her first Easter eggs with us and go on an Easter egg hunt. She celebrated the 4th of July with us cooking out and watching fireworks. Dahiana carved her first pumpkin for Halloween. She helped us decorate our Christmas Tree. It was her first time baking and decorating Christmas cookies as well. Dahiana helps the children with their manners, chores, schoolwork and so much more. Virtual "E-learning" has been a challenge for all of us and she has breezed through it with the kids. She has also taught them some of her Spanish language. Our 3 year old has surprised us at times with Spanish words she has learned. She loves to say, "Chocala" which means high-five in Spanish. Dahiana enjoys doing crafts with the kids which they love doing.
We got to share many special moments together traveling this year. We took a family trip to Dale Hollow reservoir in Tennessee. Dahiana rode on a boat for the first time and got to drive a jet ski. We went to Florida to visit family in October and surprised the kids and Dahiana with a trip to Disney World. One of Dahiana's dreams was to visit Disney World. We were so grateful that we were able to make this happen for her and our family this year. It was truly a magical experience to watch the kids and Dahiana enjoy this trip to its fullest.
Dahiana couldn't be more fantastic with the children. She anticipates the children's needs and helps us stay on task. Working full time and raising young children can be a little crazy and chaotic at times, not to mention, throw in a pandemic to make things even crazier. Dahiana is such a rock for us.
She is trustworthy and dependable. Not to mention she is so incredible with the kids and they have formed such an amazing bond with her.
I honestly don't know what we would have done this year without Dahiana. She has enriched our lives so much and we have become so close with her. We are overjoyed that she will be spending a second year with us. She is such a deserving person and we hope to share many more special moments and experiences together with her as a family.
