5 Ways to Help Those in Need This Winter

5 Ways to Help Those in Need This Winter

Winter time can be great for many of us as we get to spend time with family and friends, enjoying the comforts of our warm homes and plentiful kitchens. However, that is not the case for everybody. Many are left in the cold without food, warm clothes, and shelter. If you can spare your time and a helping hand, it will make a world of difference to those in need. Here are our ideas for helping others this winter:

  • Volunteer at a food kitchen o Although it’s great to help all year long, the winter months are an especially important time to volunteer at a food kitchen or shelter. With so many more individuals looking for a hot meal and trying to escape the cold, any extra set of hands is appreciated. Not only does it make things so much easier for everyone involved, it also is a humbling reminder of what you should be thankful for.

  • Create care packages Head to your local discount store and grab some essentials for a care package. Toiletries like lip balm, sunscreen, toothpaste, etc., are always needed and appreciated at shelters. Include some warms socks and gloves, a reusable water bottle, some protein- rich snacks, and even a good book. No matter what, doing something is better than nothing. And any package given will be appreciated.
  • Donate warm clothes o It’s time to clean out your closet and get rid of all the things you promise you’ll wear again, but realistically never will. Get everyone in the family involved and find warm clothes that could help those in need more than you right now. Find a local charity or organization that accepts clothing donations near you, like Goodwill or The Salvation Army. Ask neighbors and friends to join in while you’re collecting. You’d be surprised with how much goes unused. Your old clothes can be put to much better use by a local shelter.

  • Be nice! A smile goes a long way. Be kind to everyone, especially those in need. You never know someone else’s struggle and know how far your kindness will go. The More With Less Mom blogger said it best, “A person is a person, no matter where they live”. By lending a hand when you can, and showing kindness and understanding, you can make a huge difference.
  • Help at an animal shelter While it certainly is important to help our human friends, we can’t forget about our four-legged ones. If you have some time to spare, head to your local animal shelter and see what you can do to lend a hand in protecting animals in your area. What better way to destress from the craziness of the holidays then to snuggle with an animal in need?
