Spotlight on Turkey

Sitting at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, Turkey is surrounded by eight different countries and three beautiful seas.  The historic region is known as the home of great empires and old battlegrounds that date back to the beginning of civilization.  The people and culture of Turkey today still keep their history in perspective, while also seeking enjoyment in their day to day life.  Moreover, Turkish people emulate more of a collectivist society where the group is considered more important than the individual.  Thus, members of society thrive in their interactions and tend to socialize more in groups.

Family Values

Group orientation is very important in the Turkish culture.  Traits such as aggressiveness and individualism are looked down upon, while ensuring the well being of the group is promoted more.  Traditional families still remain the dominant type within the culture and members take great pride in their ancestors and history.  Important values for the Turks are educational achievement and honorable heritages, while they also prize characteristic traits such as honesty and a good sense of humor.

Education

The Turkish educational system mandates eight years of primary education, and then three or more years of high school education.  Upon completing high school, students must take and pass a "finishing examination" in order to continue their studies at an university.  Over 1 million students enroll in the university system each year, and a good majority of them complete some of their studies in other European countries exposing themselves to new environments and cultures.  Students at this level take courses for another 2 to 4 years depending on their focus, and some are even required to complete an extra year for studies in the English language (depending on their university).

Recreation

Sports are predominatly the main form of recreation in Turkey.  The people love to watch and play soccer!  Other sports such as cycling, basketball, swimming, and volleyball are also frequently enjoyed in free time in the Turkish culture.  Cultural events such as theatre performances and festivals are highly atteneded, as well as musical performances.  Certain fractions of the country look to music as a way to pass traditions and stories along to future generations.  Religion and ethnicity also influence the various styles and forms of music appreciated within the country.

Cuisine

From shish kebabs to baklava, Turkish cuisine consists of many renown items.  The first meal of the day tends to be on the lighter side, usually consisting of bread, butter or honey, cheese, and olives.  The larger meal of the day is served in the evening with the entire family sitting down together.  Turkish coffe, known as kahve, is also served with every meal.  Overall though, food preparation, style and taste are all heavily influenced by the different regions of Turkey.
