Los Angeles AuPairCare Au Pairs Earthquake advice

Dear Au Pairs,

I hope you are all feeling OK after yesterday’s earthquake here in LA..?

I know we talk about “what to do in an earthquake” at the Orientation Meetings but now is definately a good time to go over some safety tips again:

1) Discuss with your Host Family to see if they have a ‘Family Earthquake Plan’ - eg what everyone should do if there is a big earthquake eg, where to meet, who to call etc

2) Find out from your Host Family, where they keep any earthquake supplies eg bottled water, cans of food, flashlights…

3) Put together your own backpack with spare set of clothes, shoes and flashlight and keep it under your bed

4) Ask the family to show you where the gas shut off is, and how to do it (as this will need to be turned off if there is a big earthquake to prevent fire)

5) Finally, have a look round the house  and find a heavy table eg dining room table or desk. If there is a big earthquake, you should gather the children and get under something heavy like a wooden table. You want to GET DOWN, COVER YOUR HEAD & HOLD ON.

Do you have earthquakes in your home country..? Perhaps some of you have some other tips you might like to share with the group..?

Take care all…Claire

yeah it was quite scary… in france where i live i already had 2 earthquakes but very small and you could hardly feel them but the one we’ve got on tuesday was quite big i think… but thank god everything was fine especially for the babies…
we already talked a lot about it with my family and i know what to do in that case… but that’s scary because you’ve to react so fast… but well… i hope it’s not gonna happen anymore…
