Learn what it's like to be a student in the United States as part of the au pair program. The U.S. Department of State requires that all au pairs complete not less than six semester hours (or their equivalent) of academic credit in formal educational settings at accredited U.S. post-secondary institutions.

Studying in the U.S is a great way to improve your English skills, make American friends and experience campus life. As an au pair in the USA you may want to study English (or another language!), Art History, Astronomy or even American Cinema.

As a condition of program participation, the host family must agree to facilitate the enrollment and attendance of au pairs in accredited U.S. post secondary institutions and to pay the cost of such academic course work up to $500.

Travel as an Au Pair in America

Your J-1 visa gives you the opportunity to spend an additional month in the United States after your au pair program has ended. Many au pairs take advantage of this time to travel around the country. It's the ideal way to finish off your year in North America!

You might want to get a look at some of the scenic wonders of America: the Grand Canyon, Niagara Falls, Yosemite National Park, or the Rocky Mountains. Or maybe visit some of the more vibrant American cities - New York City, New Orleans, Washington DC, Chicago, Los Angeles, or San Francisco - each of them are very unique and offer their own personality. Or maybe you'd like to see a baseball game, check out a jazz club, visit an American Indian reservation, or tour Universal Studios - the possibilities of what you can experience as an au pair in America are endless!
